    Symphony of Rain

As of last night, rain started pouring like buckets of water. Since then, it has died down quite a bit..I welcome and enjoy the company of rain at my window as it gives me a strong sense that winter is among us and the fall has truly gone. Lately my mind has been as unsettling as a cat with its claws out. Hearing the rain relaxes me, and I can feel my heart slow to the steady beat of a metronome.

    3AM, again

The bad news is it's 3AM, but the good news is I'm about to head to sleep (as opposed to having to do something else after this). Thursdays, as usual, are long days for me. I don't get out of class until the sun is fully down, and the road is too dark to see without lights. Came home and caught the Laker game at the end of the first quarter. Good game today. Kobe should have enough rest for tomorrow's game, so let's see how that turns out. I've been working on my portion of the group project, and for now, I think I'm done. Still need to put it together once I get everyone else's stuff. Also posted my mandatory comments on the school's discussion board. I need to post one more comment, but it's hard when there aren't many threads to comment on. Thought about buying the book called "Essential Haiku" to expand on my knowledge. Meh, good enough production for one day.

Some quotes I saw at Hallmark while browsing (thought they'd be worth citing):
"Life isn't about finding yourself. It's about creating yourself." -Unknown.
"Peace. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart." -Unknown.
"A misty morning does not signify a cloudy day." -Ancient proverb.
"Believe nothing. No matter where you read it or who has said it. Not even if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense." -Buddha.
"Risk more than others think is safe, care more than others think is wise, dream more than others think is practical, expect more than others think is possible." -Cadet Maxim.

    Never-Ending Cycles

Today was a shorter long day. Why you ask? My days are always long, and even when short, they aren't really short at all. But saying that the day is normal or medium in duration wouldn't make much sense either, nor would it have an extreme to anchor to. But that's besides the point I'm getting at. Projects and tests occur on a timeline that never ends. Once you're done with one, another starts. Right now I'm working on a group project due next Wednesday. It was assigned a while ago, but who has time to start prior to midterms and other individual papers? Well, at least it's a short project compared to all the other stuff I've done this quarter. I got my test score back today for my 2nd midterm. Oh yes! 79/80 hits the top of the chart again. Studying paid off, but the material is still damn hard no matter how I look at it, even in hindsight. Now isn't exactly the time to celebrate either, as by Friday I'll get a study guide to the Final exam. And W-T-F, all my classes have cumulative finals. Bloody hell! That's my cue to pass out or fall out of my chair.

    Obesity

Want to know why people have expanding waistlines? It's because in an era driven by innovation, we, as people, have adapted to using our mental strength instead of our physical strength. Evidence of this can be seen as more people leave farm work for office work. When we take the phrase "brains over brawn" to heart, what we get is obesity. When referring to mental strength, one may be quick to assume that I'm speaking of males, however, females have also been steering towards work in the labor force instead of at home. I'm pro-women independence, but I cannot deny that women are also a contributing factor to obesity. Because they're working, they give up the time to do tasks they have normally done in the past. Due to their shift in roles, companies have developed ways in which food can be prepped faster and is produced at a cheaper cost. Now that prices in food have declined, people feel inclined to eat more, or "get their money's worth", so to speak, since their value of what can fill them up has changed. With a lower cost, we have greater demand. With a greater demand of food, there's a greater amount of consumption, and with greater consumption there are more calories in the waist.

    Compassion

From the words of Dalai Lama-
    • When we enhance our sensitivity toward others' suffering through deliberately opening ourselves up to it, it is believed that we can gradually extend out compassion to the point where the individual feels so moved by even the subtlest suffering of others that they come to have an overwhelming sense of responsibility toward those others.
    • Actions motivated by the desire to create a good name for ourselves are still selfish, however much they may appear to be acts of kindness.
    • If we reserve ethical conduct for those whom we feel close to, the danger is that we will neglect our responsibilities toward those outside this circle.
    • The more we are compassionate, the more we provide for our own happiness.

    Monday

So little did I know, there's actually a lot of reading for the class I had written my long paper for. I did a lot yesterday, but there's more. That's quite anal of my professor, but I guess it isn't completely his fault since it was on the syllabus, hah, yeah right. Well, I got to get to it. Nerd

I updated photos taken from before and during Thanksgiving: Edibles, Room, Nekos, and Other Shots.

    Sunday

Today was a rather slow day. Slept late last night, so got up even later this afternoon. I took about 2 1/2hrs working on the website for my dad. Didn't wake up in time for lunch yet it was already time for dinner by the time I was done. Heating up the leftovers, which were still damn delicious by the way, and watched the Laker game. This was a really entertaining game from start to finish. I'm disappointed that we lost, but I'm glad the efficiency was there minus one player; Radmanovic. Ironically, we gave him the last shot. ?? Obfuscated? I am. I thought Fisher, as the in bounder, would surely get the ball back. He deserved it too. Now the weekend is over, and Thanksgiving is gone, so it's time to get back into academic-mode. Silent reading time starts now.

    Black Friday

Well, despite not really needing to go to shop yesterday, I bought a 4gb SanDisk Pro duo memory stick for my camera. At $34.99, it's too good of a deal to pass up especially before a trip like Taiwan during Christmas. So yes, I was a consumer in yesterday's madness. Didn't exactly go early though, so I missed the long lines. Around 10AM, the parking lots were decent; no open spots, but people were leaving as soon as others were coming in. The stores were packed (Best Buy and Circuit City), but it seems like they were more under control than they have been in previous years. It's hard to comment exactly how crazy it usually is because in the past I've gone to the stores in Pasadena, and those...are crazy. The day continued with Live Free or Die Hard. It's pretty darn good with a lot of witty humor thrown in by Justin Long. The action is all there, but I'm not sure how it'd be comparable to the action in Transformers, considering they came out one day apart in theaters a couple months back.
Then it was the disappointing Laker game. OMG, I can't even begin to describe the game. Lakers lost, but is it because the Celtics are too good or because Lakers just had no game? We gave away uncontested layups, we had turnovers left and right, shots were coming short, we weren't going after rebounds, we were shooting unnecessary 3-pointers, the overall shooting percentage was piss poor, and we pretty much let Boston have their way as the team "bent over". Garnett, Allen, and Pierce don't even seem like they're trying all that hard. Playing the Lakers must have been really boring. Anytime the lead for them surmounted, their starters would go out; and it's not like Boston has a weak bench. And if Lakers got it within 5 points, Celtics would sub their starters back in and we'd be annihilated all over again. What a sad sight!
Ah, so here's the good stuff... Last night's dinner was ze best, courtesy of the Iron Chef of El Cerrito. Turkey breast and nuggets, mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, and corn with ham. It was so damn delicious I went in for 3 plates and I believe each dish was sample tested by Widget and Cereal. Pictures of the meal, as well as some other random photos will be up shortly. After dinner was some NBA2k7, haha yeah, still in 07 for now (trying to finish off the playoffs before I get 2k8). If only Lakers can play the way I control them in the game..Then was some good ol' fashioned Super Smash Bros. on Gamecube. Smash for the win! Best multiplayer game ever invented by Nintendo.

    Happy Thanksgiving

Ah, November 22nd. Happy Thanksgiving! I've been in a different zone lately with a lot of pressure on myself to finish the paper so I can enjoy the weekend. For the most part, I can say I'm done. I need to go back and work on proper citations, but the meat is on the table. Well, if today is Thanksgiving, that means tomorrow is....Black Friday! It's the one day all the consumers in Southern California go crazy blitz rushing into every possible store you can think of. Usually, I'm pretty stoked about it as well, but this year I just don't have anything to buy nor do I have the money to buy anything. If I do go though, you can bet on it that there's a dramatic story to tell, about the freezing cold morning, the sleepless waiting for the clock to hit 4AM, the growling stomaches, the agitated people, the sleepwalking teenagers, the rowdy families that make it an "event", etc etc...It's an experience, and the best one is probably no other than Fry's Electronics. The line to get into the parking lot is worse than trying to leave the Staple's Center during a sold out game and the line getting into the store is worse than being at the end of the line of the last entry for Haunted Mansion at Disneyland when it was decked out to be A Nightmare Before Christmas. Lovely.
Oh, this weekend should be sweet since the movie Hitman is out in theaters and Live Free or Die Hard is out on DVD. Looking forward to it!

    Essay

Sleepy Been working on my essay...Sigh..I'm only maybe a quarter done and that's without getting into the belly of the beast. Done for today, since I got an early class tomorrow. I was planning to have it done by tomorrow, but it seems a bit impossible. I guess I'll see how things go. The paper prompt covers way too much area. I wish it were more focused so I wouldn't seem like I'm jumping from topic to topic. There are broad questions that break down into specifics, yet the "specifics" don't particularly pertain to the questions.

    Would you rather..

Taken from my text, I thought this was an interesting question:
"Would you rather earn more or just more than other fellows?" What it's asking is if given that all other factors are the same, working with the same people, doing the same job, same location, etc. Would you take a job offer earning $60,000 knowing that everyone else being hired for the job (doing the exact same tasks as you) would earn $65,000? Or would you rather take the same job making $55,000, knowing that others being hired will be given a salary of $50,000? I guess it's a personal choice between values possibly being undercut vs monetary consequences. It's a legitimate question in my opinion because not everyone will have the same answer.

BTW, I added a new Superheroes list and updated Nekos and Edibles albums.

    Digitalworld

AT&T has this "Digitalworld" thing that was printed in Maxim, so I went to check it out. Looked cool, but the page loaded really slow for me. It's an animated digital DNA looking strand that moves around and as you click each cell, it'll say "User name says/thinks/has/likes/does such and such." I tried embedding it in my blog, but apparently Spaces doesn't let me. I can preview it fine, but once I publish, it's a blank spot. I guess it's because under where we type our blog entries, it says "Some HTML tags may be removed from your entry for security and formatting reasons." Sucks because I spent quite a long time answering all of the questions. Oh well, here are 2 screencaps of what my digitalworld looked like. It's the same strand but the cells move around. I'm pretty sure this will work for other types of blogs such as MySpace though, since the HTML codes were intended for it.

    Can't Live Without

So one paper down, one to go. The next one is going to be tougher since I don't have a good grasp of the whole concept yet. Anyways, here's 5 things that I can't live without:
    1. My Cars- They are extensions of my being, much like my limbs. Without them I will feel helplessly immobilized.
    2. Opportunities- Where would anyone be without them? Where are you now because of them?
    3. Change- Life isn't at a standstill and the consequences of our actions are not restricted in a vacuum.
    4. Time- Without time we are unable to create our existence.
    5. Heart- Allows our emotions to fuel our drive to accomplish what others consider impossible. Impossible is nothing.
It is not to say that other things in life can be given up for these 5 things, but to me they are necessary factors. As much as we can love our family or our significant other, people can exit our lives as easily as they enter it. Undoubtedly, they are factors, but they do not impede on our ability to "move on". Eventually all people will leave in one way or another, only leaving us with memories. In this case, I would suggest that given a 6th option it would be "memories."  To clarify the first response, I must point out that everyone has at least one tangible good that they can say provides them with content. This "thing" may change as we move through different stages in our lives as we find new "things" to replace them with. As shallow as it may seem, for me it is my cars. For others it may be their cell phone, their computer, their game console, their toys, etc. Our "things" may or may not define who we are, but we cherish them enough to dedicate a part of our lives/time into having those "things." They become a security blanket so to speak, but they are not necessarily our primary focus of living each day. We all need to have a "thing" that lets us look forward to the next day.

    Internet Speed

So AT&T came by today to install their U-Verse service. Internet was down for a while, but Tomas, our tech, got it up in no time. There were some difficulties getting the computers to go online, but all the problems have been solved. I felt bad for the guy too because he was allergic to cats. All the PCs are now wireless, as well as the PS3. The TV has 1000+ channels and the service comes with a DVR. So no more missing shows Open-mouthed and no more dealing with Charter's excuses either. This is a broadband speed test I just took to evaluate the service. So far, so good. Let's see how customer service handles issues later down the line.

    If the Present were Past

So imagine if 10-15 yrs from now, you have a kid in school wanting to do a report on you. This is typical right? We had reports in elementary school or middle school on our parents' history; lifestyle, travels, hardships, and such. Well, what would you tell them? Our past is right now and what we had growing up isn't it? We had CRT monitors, typewriters, hard drives on large disks, we ran MS-DOS and Macintosh OS's in school, the largest external storage at one point in time was the 1.44mb floppy disk, we accessed the internet via dial-up modems, girls wore longer skirts Tongue out, white t-shirts were cool, baggier clothes the better, MGM was a big hotel in Vegas, our President gave into temptation, there were no digital cameras, camcorders weighed 15lbs, gas was under $2 a gallon........

I added a list of sites, a list of movies, some more photos to the edibles album, and a couple permanent userbars. I should probably credit userbars.com as that's where I've found most of them.
Time for bed. AT&T is coming by for a U-Verse install sometime between 8-10AM.

    Another Late Night

Well, it's another late night for me today. Nothing out of the ordinary, as I've grown to be quite accustomed to it. Now that the exam is over, I have to tackle one of two papers. It'll probably be around 5 pages; easy enough right? Hell no. The TA is the most anal-retentive guy I've ever met. He grades on his own standards that do not reflect that of other TAs or the professor. He has more requirements than what's listed on the class syllabus. And all of this is argued, by him, as "for the greater good." Oh please, spare me of your reasoning you pompous ass. Even English courses don't have as many nitpicky requirements. He has single-handedly turned a course I enjoyed into one that I dread going to.

I can't emphasize it enough...THE most; to the point where when we play pictionary, and I draw a card with the word "anal-retentive", I'd sketch the TA's face.

    Pfft..Nothing more to say. x_x!

    November 14

    ("\(o.O)/")!!!

So, it's 4PM, I've came out of exam alive. In fact, better than alive, because I feel so liberated to have something worth 20% of my grade off my chest. Beyond that, it's an even better feeling since I "think" I did better than my first one. With an anal professor and an out-of-sync TA though, who knows for sure. >.<"
-Break- Went to eat lunchner. I've been starving since 11AM.

So two things that I thought about over eating.
    • Integrity isn't jeopardized when you do something wrong and get caught for it. It's the mere action of doing itself that makes you lose integrity. Being caught is only a public display of the consequence. The real consequence has already happened from within.
    • Love isn't about finding the one you can live with. It's about finding the one you can't live without. There's no such thing as the "right one" until you get into love, because without experiencing how it is to be with someone, you can't deem them to be the "one". With that said, however, you can still determine those who are "wrong" for you.

    Insomnia

One of the worst things that can happen before an early test day is insomnia. I think this happens to me almost every time. Because I "over-worry," my mind doesn't shut down. And the thing is, all the stuff going on in my head isn't exactly test related. Some of it is, probably because of self-doubt that I know the material. But I'm also concerned with 2 papers that are due within the next week. In my opinion, that's pretty messed up; to be thinking of other things that is. I know I should focus on the task at hand, primarily to get sleep at this point, or to think only of the midterm, but it just doesn't work that way in my head. As soon as you think "stop thinking," you're already thinking again.

Since I can't sleep anyways, I'd like to vent some frustration about the Lakers. W-T-F. Is the team turnover happy or what? Whenever we play the Spurs, I never have the expectation to win. For once I'd like to be proven wrong. There are good games and bad games, but more likely than not, when we're playing against the Spurs, it's a bad game. Our offense was nonexistent except maybe for the one or two explosive moves from Farmar. Kobe did his part on D, and it can be expected that he's not going to shoot the lights out every game. Where's everyone else? Like KG said, it's "We not Me." Let's get it together.
